Seals
Seals at Waxham Beach:
Waxham is part of a larger grey seal colony.
Grey seals come ashore to give birth and mate from late October to January, making this a particularly good time to see them.
You can often spot seals on the beach, in the water, or even from the dunes, depending on the time of year and the seals’ behavior.
Waxham is located near other seal-watching spots like Horsey Gap and Sea Palling.
It’s important to maintain a respectful distance from the seals and avoid disturbing them, especially during pupping season, as they are a protected species. Following the guidance of Friends of Horsey Seals wardens is recommended.
The dunes offer a good vantage point for spotting seals, especially if you have binoculars.
Tips for Seal Watching:
- Binoculars: Bring binoculars to get a closer look at the seals without disturbing them.
- Dress Warmly: The Norfolk coast can be cold, especially in winter.
- Keep Dogs on Leashes: Keep dogs on leads at all times to prevent them from disturbing the seals.
- Respect the Seals: Do not approach the seals too closely and avoid disturbing them.
- Contact Professionals: If you see a seal that appears to be in distress, contact the Friends of Horsey Seals.
